aerial photograph of Castle Stede motte and bailey, Hornby Lancashire, England UK. Castle Stede was one of several motte and bailey castles built along the Lune Valley in the 11th Century. The site was carefully chosen to guard the river crossing and for the same reason a Pill Box was constructed on the site in the second world war. Othe left of the photo is Grade II listed Loyne Bridge which is a rare example of a late medieval bridge still in use and is a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The exact construction date is unknown but it probably dates from the 16th century. Prior to that there was a wooden bridge and before that just a ford.
