aerial photograph showing a cut off section of the Lancaster Canal upper reaches running up to where it is cut by the A590 in the top of the photo. The Lancaster Canal Link to Kendal was opened in 1819 and finally severed by the construction of the M6 motorway and A590 road in the 1960s. There are plans by the Northern Reaches Restoration Group to reopen this section of the canal and then on to Kendal and in order to achieve that a tunnel will need to go under the A590 main road at the top of the photo.
