aerial photograph of Bowes Castle, Durham UK. Bowes Castle was built by Henry II at the end of the 12th century on the site of what had been the Roman fort of Lavatrae. The Roman Ramparts were reused as the outer Baily of the 12th Century castle. The castle held out against numerous attacks by Scottish forces during the 13th century but by the 14th century lay in ruins. Most of the castle was demolished at the end of the English Civil war and what is left today is under the care of English Heritage and open to the public.
