aerial photograph of Chester Castle Chester England UK. Chester Castle was originally built in 1070 shortly after the Norman conquest. Originally it was constructed as a wooden Motte & Bailey Castle. This was reconstructed in stone and continually updated during the medieval period. The castle was heavily fought over during the English civil war, but there after military use was largely replaced by civil use as a court and prison. Much of the castle was rebuilt for prison use in the late 18th and early 19th century. The Castle is still used as Chester Crown Court.
