aerial Photograph of Saltwood Castle Kent UK. The Grade I listed Saltwood Castle is a medieval fortification built not long after the Norman Conquest in the 11th Century and then extended and improved in the 13th and 14th Centuries. The castle was built on the site of a previous castle dating from AD 488 and may even be a Roman site. The Castle was owned by the Archbishops of Canterbury until taken over by Henry VIII in 1540. It is believed that the Knights who killed Thomas Becket met here prior to the murder in 1170. Image available for editorial licencing only
