aerial photograph of St Mary's Church & Reculver Roman Fort, Regulbium in Kent UK. Reculver Roman Fort is a Saxon Shore built around AD 210, to defend the Roman Empire from attacks by marauding Saxons. The fort replaced an earlier smaller structure built around AD60.After the Romans withdrew from Britain the site was occupied in the Saxon period by the Kings of Kent who founded a monastery on the site in AD 669. St Mary's Church appeared in the Doomsday book of AD 1086 as being the parish church. The church was expanded during the medieval period including the twin towers which were constructed during the 12th century. The site suffered from coastal erosion and the church was partially demolished in 1809.At the time it was decided to retain the towers as they were a landmark for shipping navigation and so some steps were taken to mitigate the coastal erosion
