Wide angle aerial photograph of the site of Burscough Roman fort, Burscough Lancashire UK. Burscough Roman fort is one of the most recent and remarkable discoveries. Although the location was called "Castle Field" on 19th century maps it was not until 2013 that the first excavations were carried out and revealed the fort which is now is thought to be a Roman auxiliary fort and dated to the first century AD during the reign of Claudius . Excavations suggest there was originally stone fort about 160m wide which was replaced by a smaller fort built on the same site at a later date. No evidence of habitation later than the 4th century has been found. The site is protected as a scheduled monument ( 1470328 ). A field divide runs up the centre of the image and the area covered by the forts is all along the open fields left of the field divide particularly between the two brown patches. Somewhere down there is the Roman road from the fort to Liverpool. Whle I can see nothing close to the fort, I can see on the map about 2 miles away a lane called Lady's Walk which points straight at the fort from the Liverpool direction. If you look at the background centre there is a large farm complex. Just to the right and behind it you will see a dead straight line pointing directly at the camera. That's Lady's walk and my layman's uneducated guess is that will be the Roman Road to the fort.
